We Are on the Same Block as the Medical Center

Our address is 915 Gessner Road. Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center is at 929 Gessner Drive, a few doors away.

That hospital opened in 1971 as Memorial City General Hospital and took its present name in 1988. It is a large campus, with 427 licensed beds recorded as of 2009.

Being this close matters on the days it counts. If your foot needs advanced imaging, it is a short walk. If a problem needs a surgical opinion, you are not making a second trip across Houston for it.

Finding Memorial City, and Finding Us

Memorial City sits where Interstate 10 meets Gessner Road, about eleven miles west of downtown Houston.

Memorial City Mall anchors that corner and is the landmark most people navigate by. It was dedicated on 25 August 1966 and had grown to 1.3 million square feet of leasable space by 1977.

From Interstate 10, take the Gessner Road exit and head south. The office is in the medical building at 915 Gessner Road. Suite 650 is on the sixth floor.

Give yourself a few extra minutes during morning clinic hours. The block is busiest then, because the hospital campus and the mall share the same intersection.

What We Treat for Memorial City Patients

Most people who walk in here are dealing with one of a handful of problems. You can read about any of them in detail on our conditions we treat pages.

  • Heel pain. Usually plantar fasciitis, and usually worst on the first steps of the morning.
  • Bunions and hammer toe. Both change how a shoe fits long before they become painful.
  • Ingrown toenails. Treated in the office, often the same day you call.
  • Flat feet and arch pain. Frequently helped by custom orthotics rather than surgery.
  • Ankle sprains and Achilles pain. Common in weekend athletes and in anyone who runs the Terry Hershey trails.
  • Diabetic foot care. Routine checks that catch small problems while they are still small.

If you are not sure which of these describes your problem, come in and we will tell you.

Who You Will See

Dr. Douglas Hansen is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine and the physician you will see at this office.

He is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He trained at Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University, and served as chief resident at Kingwood Medical Center.

You see the same physician at each visit. Your history does not have to be repeated to somebody new every time.

The Neighborhoods We See Most

Memorial takes its name from Memorial Drive, the road that runs east to west through the area. Most of our patients come from within a few minutes of it.

That includes Memorial City itself, Spring Branch, Frostwood, Memorial Bend, Nottingham Forest and Westchester.

It also includes the Memorial Villages, immediately east of us. There are six, and each one is its own incorporated city. They are Bunker Hill Village, Hedwig Village, Hunters Creek Village, Piney Point Village, Spring Valley Village and Hilshire Village.

Memorial City itself is governed as a management district, formally Harris County Municipal Management District No. 1. That is why the area around the mall and the hospital campus feels planned rather than accidental.

If you live in any of them, this is the closest podiatry office to your door.

Problems We Can Usually Deal With the Same Day

Some foot problems can wait for a convenient appointment. Others should not.

An ingrown toenail that has become red and painful is one of those. So is a nail that has started draining. Both are treated in the office, and both get worse the longer they are left.

A fresh ankle sprain is another. The question with a sprain is whether anything is broken. That is answered with an examination and an X-ray, not with a week of waiting to see.

If you have diabetes, any new sore, blister or colour change on the foot is worth a call that day. Small problems on a diabetic foot do not stay small.

Houston Is Hard on Feet

Heat and humidity change what happens inside a shoe. Feet swell more here, and they stay damp longer.

That combination drives a lot of what we see. Blisters that will not settle. Fungal nails. Skin that breaks down between the toes.

The long warm season also means people stay active year round. Walking the Terry Hershey Park trails puts real mileage on a foot. So does doing laps inside the mall when it is too hot outside.

None of that is a reason to stop. It is a reason to deal with heel pain or arch pain early, while it is still a small problem.

What Happens at Your First Visit

We start by asking what changed and when. Foot problems usually have a history, and that history narrows the diagnosis faster than any test.

Then Dr. Hansen examines the foot and ankle directly. If an X-ray will settle the question, it is taken here rather than scheduled for another day.

You leave with a plan you understand. If that plan starts with something conservative, we will say so rather than reaching for surgery first.

Insurance and Booking

Call the office and we will check your plan before you come in. You should know what is covered before treatment starts, not after.
